The everyday wife

Lover, you hold me
in the palm of your hand,
I lie in your pocket.
I am small change.
You spend me without thinking.
You will always have me.
You do not have to save me.
I am like
an everyday wife.

If we get committed we’ll probably go insane,
sweet nothings will become bitterly inane,
bond becomes mortgage, lead-lined shoes
vows repeated solemnly, death by noose.

I think we should rather
stay loose.
